Most buildings date back to the period of Venetian rule, but it is likely that the area was inhabited perhaps on Minoan period. The village inhabitants were mainly farmers working in oil production. A quick walk these days at the village will discover more than a dozen places where once worked workshops, crushing the olives to produce olive oil. In about 3km from the village you can get to the beach of Platanias, a well known tourist resort, where all amenities can be found. In Maroulas you can find a mini market and a couple of traditional kafeneio and tavernas.
